Dragon boat racing is an exciting and popular activity in Orlando, Florida. It is a sport that involves teams of 20 rowers, a drummer at the front of the boat and a sweeper at the back of the boat. The drummer plays a drum to help the crew synchronize their paddles, while the sweeper steers the ship with a sweeping paddle. The Grand Masters Dragon Boat Club provides services to all dragon boat teams in The Villages. Dragon boat races take place on a flat water course where competitors start together and race to the finish line.
Traditional dragon boats are built for 22 people, and they use a simple paddle instead of the typical paddle found on most competitive racing boats. The front of the ship is made to look like a dragon's head and the back looks like a dragon's tail. Corporate and community teams will compete on a 300-meter regatta circuit and there will be an optional 2000 meter race for the 5 fastest large boat teams and the 5 fastest small boat teams, as time allows. This makes dragon boat rowing very easy to learn, but very difficult to master, and that's precisely why it's so popular with villagers. You can meet members of the different teams from The Villages, including the Silver Dragons, The Black Sheep, The Village Dragons, This Boat Rocks, Dragon Sisters and The Leathernecks. You can also enjoy the energy and excitement of the festival environment and be part of a vibrant community of dragon boat enthusiasts. Debra Clayton, from the Orlando Police Department, was previously involved in the Dueling Dragons program.
This program uses dragon sailing to establish long-term mentoring relationships between Orlando law enforcement officers and inner-city youth. We rely on donors like you to pay for trips to races (also known as dragon boat festivals), uniforms, food, accommodation, and more. Upon entering the park, tell the front door that you are attending the dragon boat festival and follow the signs to the festival parking area.
